They didn't need to change a thing. And yet, they changed just about everything.
Visual Concepts entered this year with a tried-and-true formula for a
basketball video game. For years, the NBA 2K series has been built on a
handful of pillars — a deliberate on-court pace, an immersive RPG
element, and a realistic dynasty piece — and these pieces have routinely
led to success. Why mess with it, right?
Wrong, decided Visual Concepts. And the end product is NBA 2K13, the
most immersive sports game this year. From the on-court experience to
the off-court life to the recent integration of hip-hop into the NBA
culture, this game wants to draw you in. And even if Jay-Z hadn't lent
his production skills to the presentation (and done a highly overrated
job, by the way), NBA 2K13 would have been a rousing success.
